Richard Jay Legere

Richard Jay Legere passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, July 13, 2026, at the age of 83. He was born January 30, 1943, in Franklin County, Indiana, to Clarence Snede Legere and Lucille Wilkerson. He grew up in Laurel, Indiana. He married Judy Sparks of Connersville, Indiana, on April 8, 1960. He was a faithful member of First Southern Baptist Church in Rushville, Indiana. Richard dedicated 37 years of service as a Maintenance Supervisor at Pioneer Hybrid Seed Corn Company. He took great pride in his work and was known for his inventive and creative nature which contributed to his ability to engineer, fix and build just about anything. He had a passion for woodworking and found great joy in crafting beautiful furniture to give as gifts to family and friends. He loved being outdoors, whether tending his yard, garden, or farm, and he had a keen eye for antiques, curating an impressive collection throughout his home and barn. Above all, Richard cherished his family. His grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he delighted in creating adventures, telling imaginative stories, and making up songs just for them. He will be remembered as a hardworking, creative, imaginative man who also enjoyed walking every morning with his dogs, regardless of the weather. Richard was preceded in death by his son, Richard Jay Legere Jr.; his parents, Clarence Snede Legere and Lucille Wilkerson; his brothers, Jack Legere, Clarence "Jim" Legere, Robert Eugene Legere, Donald Legere, and Michael Legere; and his sisters, Jeanie Collins, Betty Parrett, Marilyn Gabbard, and Delilah Field. He is survived by his lifetime partner, Judy Legere; his children, Dona (Dave) Meckes, Darren (Amy) Legere, and Jamie (Josh Keal) York; his grandchildren, Meg (Lee) Cameron, Morgan (Sonder Collins) Walker, Casey (Alexis) Legere, Cora (Aden Lytle) Legere, Raelyn Keal, and Brooke (Matt) Pitmon; his great-grandchildren, Gavin Morton, Clara Cameron, Harper Pitmon, and Hudson Pitmon; and his brothers, John Dale Legere and Bill (Denise) Legere. Services will be held Friday, July 17, 2026 at 1 PM in Moster Mortuary with Pastor Jeff Hensley presiding. Friends are welcome to visit the family from 11 AM until the time of service in the mortuary on Friday. Burial will be held in East Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation in Richard's honor.
