Barbara J. Shaver

A loving daughter, wife, and mother, Barbara J. (Shuler) Shaver, of New Castle, Indiana passed away on December 2, 2024, where she had lived with her daughter Kristin Manning and family. Prior to moving to New Castle, she was a fifty-sixty-year resident of Rush County. Barbara was born on March 29, 1934, to Othel E. Shuler and Lora B. Shuler. She was raised as an only child as her brother, Clark, passed away within hours of being born. Barbara is survived by two daughters, Dr. Kimberly Shaver-Hood (Michele) of Buzzards Bay, MA., Kristin Manning (Edward), New Castle, Indiana; one son, Daniel Shaver of Camden, Indiana; ten grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Dr. Thomas Shaver, son Jonathan, and a brother Clark. Barbara was raised in Paragon, a small idyllic town in South Central Indiana. Barbara graduated from Martinsville High School. During her high school years she was an active member of the band and music department. After high school she attended and graduated from Franklin College where she met her future husband. When her youngest child entered Jr. High and with the support and encouragement from her family, Barbara returned to Franklin College and earned her second undergraduate degree in Elementary Education. Shortly after completing this degree, she entered the teaching profession. Barbara loved every minute of her twenty-year teaching career. The lives of many Rush County children were positively impacted by being in Mrs. Shaver’ s classroom. During this time, she also completed her master’s degree at Ball State University. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church (Rushville), Retired Teachers Association, Delta, Delta, Delta Sorority and a proud fifty-year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood. Her love and talented gift of music, namely the piano and organ was something she greatly enjoyed and shared with others throughout her life. Barbara was also an avid gardener, doting grandmother, and loyal friend to many. Barbara firmly believed one’s life experiences mattered. She lived every day of her life respecting others and treating all with kindness. Her family will miss her smile, her listening ear, and her accepting and loving personality. Please join her family for A “Celebration of Life and Memorial Service” which will be held on December 14, 2024 at 2 PM in Moster Mortuary, Rushville. Friends are welcome to visit the family from noon until time of service on Saturday. Memorial contributions in Barbara’s memory will be happily accepted by Rushville Elementary School.
